Processing an Application for a Citizenship Certificate
(Proof of Citizenship)
Consult this section to find out how long it takes to process
applications for a citizenship certificate (proof of citizenship).
Currently, the total processing time for a routine application
for a citizenship certificate is three months from
the time the Case Processing Centre (CPC) in Sydney, Nova Scotia receives
your
application
until the time you receive your certificate.
The process is divided into two (2) steps:
Step 1:
The Case Processing Centre (CPC) reviews your application to make
sure you have included the appropriate fee payment. If so, you will
receive an acknowledgment letter. If not, your application will be
returned to you.
Once you receive your acknowledgement letter, you can access your
case status by contacting the Call
Centre. |
Processing Time
This process takes approximately one (1) month from
the time your application is received at the CPC. |
Step 2:
The CPC completes a detailed review of your application.
Once your
application has been reviewed by the CPC, you will be able to access
your case status on-line using e-CAS or by contacting
the Call Centre.
If your application is complete and approved, the
CPC will send your citizenship certificate to you. |
Processing Time
This process takes approximately two (2) months from
the time you receive your acknowledgment letter. |

What is a routine application?
An application is considered routine if:
- You include all the necessary documents and information specified
in the application guide with your application;
- You include proper photographs;
- You include the correct fees; and
- No further information is required.
