CITIZENSHIP JUDGE APPOINTMENT

OTTAWA, February 29, 2000 -- Elinor Caplan, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, today announced the appointment of Rita Cox of Toronto as Citizenship Judge.

Ms. Cox is an award-winning master storyteller who has performed around the world on stage, radio and television. She was the head librarian of Toronto's Parkdale Public Library for 22 years until her retirement in 1995. Born in Trinidad, she was made a member of the Order of Canada in 1997. She presently teaches a course in contemporary children's literature at York University and is very active in the Toronto community.

Judges are appointed by Order in Council to ensure the maintenance of the citizenship application process. Citizenship Judges are responsible for making decisions with regard to applications, presiding over citizenship ceremonies and administering the oath of citizenship to new citizens.
