Consumer Products DirectorateDescriptionThe Consumer Products Directorate of Industry Canada is the federal agency whose mandate is to: - promote equity and fair competition in the Canadian marketplace; - protect consumers against false or misleading representation by establishing, administering and enforcing standards for trade in commodities; and - make sure consumers have basic and accurate product information so they can make informed purchasing decisions. To carry out our mandate, we: - investigate complaints on product misrepresentation and conduct inspections of consumer goods; - provide pre-market advice to domestic and foreign industries about Canadian rules concerning packaged consumer products, clothing and other consumer textile articles, gold and silver jewelry or other precious metal articles; - promote voluntary industry guidelines and monitor industry self-regulation; - develop policy to improve consumer programs, standards, guidelines and methodologies; and - represent Canada internationally with regard to various consumer issues, for example, before the International Organization for Standardization and the North American Free Trade Agreement. We administer and enforce the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act, the Textile Labelling Act and the Precious Metals Marking Act. We also oversee voluntary industry guidelines concerning: - environmental labelling and advertising; - textile care labelling; and - the marketing of diamonds, coloured gemstones and pearls.Keywordsconsumer
