Ottawa, April 26, 2005 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, today announced the following appointments to the National Parole Board: Prairies Region Marni Lynn Bercov of Edmonton, Alberta, has been appointed as a part-time member. Ms. Bercov is currently working in the Children’s Mental Health Centre at the Alberta Hospital in Edmonton where she is the Manager of Intake and Crisis Services. She received her M.A. in Criminology in 1986 as well as a B.A in Social Work in 1997. Ms. Bercov brings with her 13 years of work experience in the field of corrections. Between 1992 and 1998, she worked as Community Residential Facility Manager with the Edmonton John Howard Society and Acting Executive Director of the Alberta John Howard Society. From 1992-2000 she was an instructor at Grant MacEwan Community College where she taught a variety of courses in the corrections field. Quebec Region Martine Pierre-Louis of Laval, Quebec, has been appointed a part-time member. She has been a member of the Quebec Provincial Parole Board since 1996, first as a community member and subsequently as a full-time member from 1997 until the present. She received a Masters degree in Social Work from the University of Montreal in 1984 as well as a B.A. in Social Work (1982) and a B.A. in Sociology (1980) from the University of Quebec in Montreal . Ms. Pierre-Louis has also devoted much of her career to teaching, at the University of Quebec since 1985 and the University of Montreal since 1995. The National Parole Board is an independent tribunal responsible for deciding the timing and conditions of release of offenders on various forms of parole. As part of the criminal justice system, the Board contributes to the protection of society by facilitating the timely integration of offenders as law-abiding citizens. The Board’s first and foremost consideration in its decision-making is the safety of the public.
