On March 17-18, 2006, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne will host the first ever International Indigenous Cross-Border Security Summit. This two-day summit will bring together First Nations and American Indians whose communities lie in close proximity to the Canada-U.S. border, as well as government and law enforcement partners from coast to coast, to discuss issues relating to border security and management. The summit will provide all partners an opportunity to exchange views, share best practices and identify areas where future work could be considered. Key players will include the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, the Assembly of First Nations, the National Congress of American Indians, PSEPC and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency. Partners have agreed that the International Indigenous Cross-Border Security Summit represents an opportunity to achieve the following three primary objectives: - Demonstrate the strong relationship among Indigenous, Canadian and American authorities, one which focuses on overcoming challenges and obstacles concerning the security and management of the Canada-U.S. border.
- In accordance with the agenda, identify and share information and best practices among Indigenous, Canadian and American authorities in the security and management of the Canada-U.S. border.
- Undertake discussions in a mutually respectful and informed manner through which Indigenous, Canadian and American authorities may develop a well formulated and clearly articulated plan of action for continued collaborative work to address the challenges and obstacles concerning the security and management of the Canada-U.S. border.
