Ontario Business Research Institute Tax Credit (OBRI)


  • OBRI promotes research partnerships between businesses and Ontario post-secondary educational institutions.

  • A 20 per cent refundable tax credit for scientific research and experimental development expenditures incurred in Ontario as part of an eligible research institute contract.

  • Eligible Ontario research institutes are: provincially-assisted universities, colleges of applied arts and technology, research hospitals and other prescribed Ontario non-profit research organizations.

  • To assist small business, qualifying expenditures will also be eligible for the Ontario Innovation Tax Credit (OITC) for a combined refundable tax credit of 30 per cent.
