Case Studies

CPI Plastics Group
Five years ago CPI Plastics Group Ltd. was strictly a custom-order, business-to-business plastics extruder that predominantly manufactured specialty parts for the automotive industry.

Since then CPI has tripled annual sales to more than $130 million by turning itself into a North American leader in thermoplastics profile design, engineering, processing and value-added manufacturing. CPI now manufactures, distributes and sells several lines of plastic bags, as well as the well-known Rack Sack® garbage system.

The garbage bags it markets under the Rubbermaid® label are offering a serious challenge to other major brands in the marketplace.

ABC Group
From concept to product, ABC Group covers every facet of plastics processing technologies, systems and components for the global automotive industry, including air induction, fluid management, interior and exterior design, and fuel systems.

With its head office in Toronto, the company now has more than 35 facilities and 4,000 employees worldwide. The founders of the company were pioneers in the use of blow moulding in the North American auto industry in the 1970s.

Innovation remains the key to the company´s phenomenal growth, backed up by quality control that results from ABC´s distinct approach to vertical integration. R&D;, materials, design, testing, tool-making, machines, processing technology and secondary assembly systems are all controlled within the company.

Liqui-Box
Liqui-Box, a wholly-owned subsidiary of DuPont Canada , has developed sophisticated ways of sealing polyethylene bags in its Whitby, Ontario laboratories.

Liqui-Box exports turn-key packages of its patented bag-filling machinery, complete with rolls of special polyethylene film. Dairies and juice packagers employ these films to create single serving pouches. The 250 ml. pouches don´t require a pitcher to hold them, because the company has patented a technology that permits the insertion of a sharp straw through a film that seals the puncture.

California tests show waste reduction of more than 70 per cent. Liqui-Box has also developed an aseptic technology that allows packaging to keep long-life milk fresh for up to six months in remote areas without refrigeration, cutting packaging costs by as much as two-thirds.
