PLASTICS. MOULDING A VISION FOR GROWTH.

Canada offers the plastics manufacturing industry with one of the lowest business costs in the G7, including a 4.5 percentage point cost advantage over the U.S. – making a huge difference to your bottom line. These are findings from the Competitive Alternatives: KPMG’s Guide to International Business Costs, 2006 edition which provides a comprehensive analysis of plastics production costs in nine countries and 128 cities in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Canada boasts a thriving plastics industry with over 2,600 companies employing a workforce of 129,000. In 2005, exports totalled Cdn$18.6 billion and imports were valued at Cdn$15.1 billion.

KPMG’s operational model was an independent plastic products manufacturer. The production facility had a workforce mix weighted toward skilled operators, with relatively high energy requirements.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

  • Canada ranks third in the G7 as a low-cost investment location in the plastics sector.

  • The Canadian plastics industry, which is closely integrated with the manufacturing operations of the automotive, aerospace, medical devices and telecommunications, benefits from the significant cost advantages that Canada offers in these sectors.

  • Canadian labour and benefit costs and utilities costs are the second lowest in the G7. As well, Sherbrooke ranks among the top five low-cost G7 locations for this sector occupying the third position.
