CLEOPATRA - The perfect match for CAESAR – the international anthropometric database. Anthropometry is the study of human body dimensions. The changes in these human dimensions are reflected in the changes in design for workplaces, equipment and consumer products.

Cleopatra describes human bodies according to shape, data and measurements. The result is a unique data mining system for anthropometric databases. Cleopatra retrieves similar individuals and clusters the population according to various criteria like three-dimensional shape, anthropometric measurements and statistical data. Cleopatra is built on Alexandria, our patented solution for 3D object databases, and extends this research into new applications.

Cleopatra is tested by the international CAESAR™ Project. The goal of the CAESAR™ Project is to generate a database of human physical dimensions by digitally scanning the human body to provide more comprehensive data than was previously available through traditional methods of measurement. By providing a 3D search engine for a digitally scanned database, Cleopatra enables 3D databases to be used effectively in applications like transportation, ergonomics, virtual mannequins and fashion.

The Cleopatra project began in January 2000, and is part of NRC-IIT-VIT’s ongoing research to provide scientific technologies and techniques to collaborative partners in other disciplines by employing its expertise in visual sensing and processing. NRC-IIT-VIT has been able to develop useful technology for problems in anthropometry, design and customization in collaboration with such partners as:

  • SITE (University of Ottawa)
  • University of Pretoria (South Africa)
  • CAESAR™ Consortium
(BAE Systems, Bertrand Faure, The Boeing Company, Case Corporation, Caterpillar Inc., Daimler Chrysler, Dayton Hudson, Deere & Company, Ford Motor Company, Gap Inc., General Motors, Georgia Institute of Technology, Herman Miller, International Truck and Engine Corporation, Jantzen Inc., Johnson Controls Inc., Laboratory of Accidentology, Biomechanics & Human Behavior, Lear Corporation, Lee Company, Levi Strauss & Company, Lockheed Martin Aeronautical, Magna Interior Systems Engineering, Mazda North American Operations, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, NIOSH, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., Public Technologies Multimédia, Inc., Sara Lee Knit Products, Sears Manufacturing Company, Transport Canada, Vanity Fair, Inc., Visteon, Your Fit.Com).

Cleopatra has received two Recognition Awards, in 2000 and 2001, from The Engineering Society for Advancing Mobility in Land Sea Air and Space (SAE), an international association for advancing the engineering of mobility systems.
