Abstract

Software and Information Technology (IT) have become integral aspects of scientific research. However, in too many cases the IT issues are an impediment to the scientific discovery process rather than a supporting tool. This colloquium describes a collaborative project between NRC’s Institute for Information Technology (NRC-IIT) and the Institute for Ocean Technology (NRC-IOT) for managing the software and information resources of a scientific and engineering organization. It outlines research we have been conducting for developing an integrated environment in which scientific researchers and technologists can manage their software and information resources in a more effective manner. The talk will describe a system we have developed that has the following objectives:

  • Facilitate the integration of off-the-shelf software applications used by researchers.
  • Represent the workflows used within the organization.
  • Manage the information and software resources of an organization.

An initial implementation of a software framework has been developed that allows us to explore ways to meet these objectives. The software framework and experiences with integrating the framework into an organization will be described.

Speaker's Biography

Dr. Mark Vigder is a Senior Research Officer with the Institute for Information Technology in the area of Software Engineering. Dr. Vigder has over twenty years experience in developing and researching software systems. His career began in the  late 70's developing tools to help users collaborate over a network. For the next 10 years, he worked on teams that developed system software for network based microcomputers and protocols for networked applications. After working as a software developer, Dr. Vigder became a researcher in the field of software engineering. He obtained a Ph.D. from Carleton University on the topic of the modeling of concurrent software systems. Since joining the NRC in 1992, his interests have included software architectures, integrating COTS software products, and software cost estimation techniques. He is currently interested in integration and interoperability of systems, particularly in the support of scientific activities.
