What we do

The NRC Institute for Information Technology (NRC-IIT) conducts scientific research, develops technology, creates knowledge and supports innovation. NRC-IIT's core business is to conduct research in software and systems technologies — including algorithms, methodologies and software engineering — as well as some applied research.

Typically, NRC-IIT's research leads to proof-of-concept, but not to near market-ready products, unless required to transfer technology. The Institute is proud of its strong track record of working with its partners to commercialize or apply the outputs of its research.

The Institute strives to be as innovative in its business practices as it is in the research it conducts. NRC-IIT's innovative solutions include licensable technologies, R&D support, business mentoring and other services, as well as flexible working partnerships for collaborative research.

The Institute is also committed to disseminating, and facilitating access to, the results of its research in other ways. To that end, NRC-IIT publishes its research results and hosts a colloquium series for information exchange.

The Institute's core competencies are in:

  • knowledge management
  • intelligent systems
  • computational video
  • high performance computing
  • 3D digitizing and visualization
  • software engineering
  • broadband visual communication
  • human-computer interaction
  • network security
  • e-learning
  • e-business
  • wireless systems
