Intelligent Optimization of Industrial Operations (IO2)

The goal of the project was to research, develop, integrate and test advanced reasoning and optimization algorithms and apply them to the mining environment. A generic architecture was developed to facilitate the integration of these optimization and reasoning algorithms within the organization. This research will result in a more efficient operation of the mine.

IO2 is a distributed intelligent decision-making/support system, which allows more effective use of the large volumes of available operational and maintenance data. IO2 correlates this data with the knowledge available in modern technical environments. A prototype has been developed and evaluated for surface mining truck and shovel fleet deployment and maintenance. The prototype is based upon a novel distributed architecture and incorporates three decision-making/support modules: one for truck dispatch; another for monitoring, diagnosis and repair management of the fleet; and a third for arbitration/optimization between the other two (tactical) modules.

The original IO2 project ended in April 2002. The NRC team continues to work on refinement of the system and porting of the prototype to other domains to test its reusability.
