High Performance Computing

Located in Ottawa, Ontario, the High Performance Group (HPC) is one of the NRC Institute for Information Technology’s (NRC-IIT) 14 research groups. Its focus is in the area of grid computing; that is, the exploitation of a varied set of networked computing resources including computers, storage and graphics devices.

HPC staff seeks to investigate how scientific applications can effectively use the resources of a grid, while hiding the underlying complexity. The group expects the initial impact of its research to be in the area of scientific endeavors and in the improved use of human and computational resources, through better coordination and integration of effort.

NRC-IIT’s research in advanced high performance computing is collaborative, with projects being conducted with partners in other NRC institutes and national public organizations, as well as the international community. For example:

The HPC group is leading the NRC Inter-Institute Program on High Performance Computing (iHPC) eScience project, Grid Infrastructure. Researchers will build the grid infrastructure that will allow NRC to conduct cross disciplinary and geographically distributed collaborations using both current and future computer resources installed at NRC labs across Canada.

At the national level, NRC-IIT supports C3.ca, the national organization for advanced high-performance computing, through the operation of the C3.ca Coordination Office.

NRC-IIT also partners with CANARIE Inc. and C3.ca in GridCanada, an informal organization established to foster and coordinate grid computing in Canada. And NRC-IIT is a partner in the NSERC-funded Strategic Award project, Mobile Agent-Based Enabling Technologies for Ad hoc Virtual Teams on the Internet, with the University of Ottawa and Mitel Corporation.

Finally, NRC-IIT collaborates with several international grid organizations on a variety of projects aimed at advancing grid computing globally, including Global Grid Forum, GridLab and APGrid.In 2002, NRC-IIT hosted the 5th Global Grid Forum meeting in New York, which was attended by more than 500 international delegates.
