3D Technologies![]() Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVE)Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVE) are emerging as a key research focus, at the convergence of computer graphics, computer vision, broadband communications, human computer interfaces and CSCW (computer supported cooperative work). They hold the promise of changing the way teams of individuals create, communicate, manipulate and disseminate information in collaborative projects. Potential applications are found in all areas requiring interaction and collaboration, such as education, design, medicine, culture and entertainment. CVEs not only provide a replacement for travel and face-to-face meetings, but can also enhance access, sharing and creation of information between individuals. Ultimately, the use of CVE has the potential to eliminate the need for travel motivated by information sharing. This will lead to major improvements in productivity and quality of life for Canadians through economic growth, increased accessibility to experts and information, as well as reduced pollution due to reduced transportation. NRC-IIT’s involvement in CVE research follows from its years of research and recognized expertise in modeling and visualization, which position it to make a significant contribution to the field. Current research efforts in virtualizing reality, 3D data mining/ management and dynamic environment acquisition will provide the foundation on which our CVE research will distinguish itself from other world stage contenders.
