Information Security
The NRC Institute for Information Technology’s Information Security (IS) Group is located in Ottawa and focuses on research associated with information security for distributed systems.
Taking a multidisciplinary approach, IS Group researchers from varied backgrounds address research issues in the following broad areas:
- Network and application security
- Confidentiality and privacy enhancing technologies
- Security Intelligence
Within these areas, the group is currently pursuing research under the following specific topics:
- Agent-based security approaches for activity monitoring
- Network protocol development for private communication
- Trustable human computer interaction and the human factors of security systems
- Scalability of security technologies
- Enterprise IT architectures for security and privacy that include:
- privacy legislation compliance,
- semi-automated policy negotiation, and
- community-based policy development
- detection and resolution of policy conflicts
The IS Group frequently works with Canadian partners, including other Federal government departments such as the Communications Security Establishment (CSE), as well as companies and universities. The group has had success in several formal research projects with collaborators elsewhere in Canada, as well as in Europe and Asia.
