Research focus

PSEPC’s Aboriginal policing research unit has three goals:

  • gauge levels of community satisfaction with the policing provided under the FNPP
  • assess the effectiveness and sustainability of Aboriginal policing
  • examine governance structures to determine overall success of Aboriginal police services

Through its various projects, PSEPC is collecting data that captures the unique community-based policing aspect of Aboriginal policing. While the Aboriginal police services are well situated to address underlying causes of criminal activity, our goal is to address the less tangible aspects of policing. The focus of current research looks at mainstream statistical indicators of effectiveness, but it also includes studying:

  • the effectiveness of the training that is provided to Aboriginal police officer recruits
  • police officer salaries and equity issues with other mainstream police forces
  • Native elders' visions of policing in their community
  • political independence in Aboriginal policing
