BRITISH COLUMBIA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED


OTTAWA

, June 20, 1996 -- The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Allan Rock, today announced the following appointments:

The Honourable Judge Anne Winter MacKenzie of Vancouver is appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in Vancouver. She replaces Madam Justice C.M. Huddart, who was appointed to the Court of Appeal.

Madam Justice MacKenzie graduated in law from the University of British Columbia in 1977, and was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1978.

Madam Justice MacKenzie practised law as a Crown counsel for the Department of Justice Canada in Vancouver until 1990. She was then appointed to the Provincial Court of British Columbia, and has been sitting in Criminal Division, Civil Division, and Family Division. Madam Justice MacKenzie is bilingual.

Master William G.E. Grist of Abbotsford is appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in Chilliwack. He replaces Mr. Justice W.H. Davies, who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Grist graduated in law from the University of British Columbia in 1973, and was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1975. He practised law with the firm of Griffiths & Company in Vancouver until 1976, when he joined the Legal Aid Society of Chilliwack. In 1978, he joined the firm of Rempel Kaye & Company, with whom he became a partner in 1980. Mr. Justice Grist has been President of the Chilliwack and District Bar Association.

Mr. Justice Grist was appointed a Master of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in New Westminster in 1990. He has been a frequent lecturer of the Continuing Legal Education Society since 1990.

Robert James Bauman of Vancouver is appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in Vancouver. He replaces Mr. Justice J.C. Bouck, who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Bauman graduated in law from the University of Toronto in 1974, and was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1975. He then joined the firm of Wilson, King & Company in Prince George. From 1977 to 1981, he practised law in Kelowna with the firm of Wilson, Bauman. In 1982, he joined the firm of Bull, Housser & Tupper, with whom he has been a partner since 1984. Mr. Justice Bauman has practised in the areas of administrative law, with emphasis on municipal law and regulatory law.

Mr. Justice Bauman has been an Adjunct Professor of Administrative law at the University of British Columbia since 1992.

These appointments are effective immediately.
