NEWFOUNDLAND JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED


OTTAWA

, June 20, 1996 -- The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Allan Rock, today announced the following appointments:

The Honourable Mr. Justice Derek Green, a judge of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland, Trial Division, is appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland, Court of Appeal. He replaces Mr. Justice J.R. Gushue, who became Chief Justice of Newfoundland.

Mr. Justice Green graduated from Oxford University with a B.C.L. in 1973 and an M.A. in 1976. He was called to the Newfoundland Bar in 1974. Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court of Newfoundland in 1992, Mr. Justice Green practised law in St. John's with the firm White, Ottenheimer & Green. He has served as Treasurer of the Law Society of Newfoundland, as Chair of the Newfoundland Law Reform Commission, and as member of the Board of Governors of the Law Foundation of Newfoundland.

This appointment is effective immediately.
