MANITOBA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, July 27, 1995 -- The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Mr. Allan Rock, today announced the following appointments:

The Honourable Mr. Justice Michel Monnin, of Winnipeg is appointed a judge of the Manitoba Court of Appeal in Winnipeg. He replaces Mr. Justice A.R. Philp, who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Monnin graduated in law from the University of Manitoba Law School in 1969, and was called to the Manitoba Bar in 1970. From 1972 until 1984, he practised law with the Winnipeg law firm of Teffaine, Monnin, Hogue, Teillet & Sharp. In 1984, Mr. Justice Monnin was appointed to the Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench in Winnipeg.

This appointment is effective August 3, 1995.

Barbara M. Hamilton, Q.C., of Winnipeg is appointed a judge of the Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench in Winnipeg. She replaces Mr. Justice W.S. Wright, who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Madam Justice Hamilton graduated in law from the University of Manitoba Law School in 1976, and was called to the Manitoba Bar in 1977. Until 1980, she practised general law with the firm of Martens, Kripiakevich, Dennehy, Parfeniuk & Ernst. From 1980 until 1987, she practised mainly corporate and commercial law with the firm of Scarth, Simonsen, Dooley, Olsen & Wiens, with whom she became a partner in 1985. Since 1987, Madam Justice Hamilton has been a partner of the firm Aikins, MacAulay & Thorvaldson. She has acted as vice-president (1991-1992) and president (1992-1993) of the Law Society of Manitoba. She has also been a Bencher of the Law Society of Manitoba.

Sylvia Guertin-Riley, Q.C., of Winnipeg is appointed a judge of the Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench (Family Division) in Winnipeg. She fills a newly created position.

Madam Justice Guertin-Riley graduated in law from the University of Manitoba Law School in 1980, and was called to the Manitoba Bar in 1981. She then joined the firm of Schwartz, McJannet & Co. and became a partner in 1987. Since 1988, she has been a partner with the firm of Riley, Orle, Guertin, Born.

Madam Justice Guertin-Riley has practised mainly civil litigation, family law and labour law.

These appointments are effective immediately, except for Mr. Justice Monnin.
