ONTARIO JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, December 13, 1995 -- The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Allan Rock, today announced the following appointments:

The Honourable Madam Justice Louise V. Charron of Ottawa is appointed a judge of the Ontario Court of Appeal. She replaces Mr. Justice P.T. Galligan, who resigned.

Madam Justice Charron graduated in law from the University of Ottawa in 1975, and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1977. She then practised civil litigation with the firm Lalonde, Chartrand & Gouin in Ottawa and was part-time Assistant Crown Attorney. From 1980 to 1985, she was Assistant Crown Attorney for the Judicial District of Ottawa-Carleton. From 1985 to 1988, she was Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa. She was appointed to the Ontario Police Commission in 1988. Madam Justice Charron was appointed to the District Court of Ontario in 1988. Since 1994, she has served as Associate Director of the National Judicial Institute. She was a member of the Association des juristes d'expression française de l'Ontario.

Marc Rosenberg of Toronto is appointed a judge of the Ontario Court of Appeal. He fills a newly created position.

Mr. Justice Rosenberg graduated in law from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1974, and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1976. He has practised criminal law since then with the firm known today as Greenspan, Rosenberg and Buhr. Before his appointment, Mr. Justice Rosenberg was working as counsel for the Ministry of the Attorney General of Ontario, Public Law and Policy Section. He has lectured on evidence at Osgoode Hall Law School since 1986. Since 1991, he has been Head of Section, Bar Admission Course in criminal procedure. Since 1977, he has been co-editor of the Weekly Criminal Bulletin. He has been assisting Edward L. Greenspan, Q.C., in editing Martin's Criminal Code since 1978 and Martin's Related Criminal Statutes since 1980. He has also been Associate Editor of Canadian Criminal Cases and Dominion Law Reports since 1978 and co-editor of Canadian Charter of Rights Annotated. From 1987 to 1990, he was Director of the Criminal Lawyers Association. Mr. Justice Rosenberg is the author of numerous publications on criminal law.

These appointments are effective immediately.

The Honourable Mr. Justice Michael J. Moldaver of Toronto is appointed a judge of the Ontario Court of Appeal. He fills a newly created position.

Mr. Justice Moldaver graduated in law from the University of Toronto in 1971, and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1973. From 1973 to 1976, he practised law with the firm Pomerant, Pomerant & Greenspan. He then practised law with the firm Greenspan, Gold, Moldaver and with the firm Greenspan, Moldaver, from 1979 to 1983. From 1983 to 1990, he practised criminal law in Toronto, and was certified a specialist in criminal law by the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1989. Mr. Justice Moldaver was appointed to the Supreme Court of Ontario in 1990.

This appointment is effective December 22, 1995.

Donald Ross Cameron, Q.C., of Toronto is appointed a judge of the Ontario Court (General Division) in Toronto. He replaces Mr. Justice D.G. Humphrey, who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Cameron graduated in law from the University of Toronto in 1961, and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1963. He then joined the firm Lash, Lash & Pringle and continued practising law with its successor firms Lash, Johnston and Lang Michener, until 1992. He has since been practising corporate, commercial and environmental law with the firm Hooey Remus. Mr. Justice Cameron has lectured in numerous Continuing Legal Education programs on environmental and business law.

This appointment is effective immediately.

Randolph Mazza of Hamilton is appointed a judge of the Ontario Court (General Division), Family Court Branch, in Hamilton. He replaces Mr. Justice T.A. Beckett, who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Mazza graduated in law from Dalhousie Law School in 1972, and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1974. From 1974 to 1975, he practised civil and criminal litigation with the firm Yachetti, Lanza and Restivo. He then practised criminal law and family law with the firm Mazza, Mazza. From 1985 to 1995, Mr. Justice Mazza was Executive Director of the Hamilton Mountain Legal and Community Services. Since 1995, he has been Vice-Chair of the Boards of Inquiry under the Ontario Human Rights Commission and Vice-Chair of the Pay Equity Tribunal. Mr. Justice Mazza recently received the Community Action Award of Ontario for his innovative work with people with disabilities.

This appointment is effective December 23, 1995.

Joan L. Lax of Toronto is appointed a judge of the Ontario Court (General Division) in Toronto. She replaces Mr. Justice M.J. Moldaver, who was appointed to the Ontario Court of Appeal.

Madam Justice Lax graduated in law from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1976, and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1978. From 1976 to 1986, she practised general litigation and administrative law with the firm Weir & Foulds in Toronto. Since 1986, Madam Justice Lax has been Assistant Dean, Director of Admissions, and since 1987, special lecturer in trial advocacy at the University of Toronto. She has also served as Vice-Chair of the Worker's Compensation Appeals Tribunal from 1986 to 1990. Madam Justice Law has been a Bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada since 1991.

This appointment is effective January 1, 1996.
