NORTHWEST TERRITORIES JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED



OTTAWA

, October 25, 1995 -- The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Mr. Allan Rock, today announced the following appointment:

Virginia Ann Schuler of Yellowknife is appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories in Yellowknife. She replaces Mr. Justice T.D. Marshall, who was appointed to the Ontario Court (General Division).

Madam Justice Schuler graduated in law from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1979, and was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1981 and the Bar of the Northwest Territories in 1982. She then joined the firm known today as Peterson, Schuler & Hudson, where she has practised criminal and civil litigation.

Madam Justice Schuler is Vice-Chair of the Discipline Committee of the Law Society of the Northwest Territories. She has been Treasurer and President of that Law Society, and was a founding member of the NWT Defence Lawyers' Association. She has also been a member of the Criminal Justice Corrections and Communications Committee established by the Chief Judge of the Territorial Court of the NWT.

This appointment is effective immediately.
