SASKATCHEWAN JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, December 7, 1995 -- The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Allan Rock, today announced the following appointment:

Gerald Norman Allbright, Q.C., of Saskatoon is appointed a judge of the Saskatchewan Court of Queen's Bench in Estevan. He replaces the late Mr. Justice W.N. Lawton.

Mr. Justice Allbright graduated in law from the University of Saskatchewan in 1970, and was called to the Bar of Saskatchewan in 1971. From 1971 to 1973, he practised law with the firm Kirkby & Allbright in Prince Albert. He then joined the Department of the Attorney General of Saskatchewan, Civil Law Branch, as a solicitor. From 1974 to 1976, he was Director of the Saskatchewan Community Legal Services Commission. From 1976 to 1984, he practised with the firm Halyk, Allbright, where he specialized in litigation. Since 1984, he has been practising criminal and civil litigation and labour arbitration with the firm Allbright & Company in Saskatoon.

Mr. Justice Allbright was a Bencher of the Law Society of Saskatchewan from 1979 to 1985. He was President of the Law Society in 1981-1982, and has also been President and Vice-President of the Saskatchewan Trial Lawyers' Association.

This appointment is effective immediately.
