BRITISH COLUMBIA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, December 12, 2002 -- The Honourable Martin Cauchon, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

Sandra K. Ballance of Vancouver is appointed a judge of the British Columbia Supreme Court.  She replaces Mr. Justice J.D. Taylor who was transferred to Nanaimo.

Madam Justice Ballance received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of British Columbia in 1984, and was admitted to the Law Society of British Columbia in 1985.  At the time of her appointment, she was a partner with the Vancouver firm of Legacy Tax & Trust Lawyers practicing exclusively in the area of estate and trust law, including estate litigation, estate planning and administration, and pension trusts and committeeships. 

Madam Justice Ballance has been very active with the Canadian Bar Association throughout her career.  She has been a member of various sections of that organization, and is a former Chair of the Wills and Trusts Section of the British Columbia Branch.  From 1998-1999, she served as President of the Estate Planning Council of Vancouver.

This appointment is effective immediately.
