ONTARIO JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA , April 15, 2005 Irwin Cotler, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:

Michael G. Quigley of Toronto is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice. He will replace Mr. Justice J.F. McGarry, who has elected to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Quigley received a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) from the University of Western Ontario in 1970, a Bachelor of Laws from McGill University in 1977, and a Masters of Law from McGill University in 1983. He was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1980.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Justice Quigley was a partner with the firm McCarthy Tétrault LLP, where he practised primarily in the area of taxation law. He is the former chair of the Taxation Section of the Ontario Bar Association and former President and Trustee of the Lawyer’s Club in Toronto . He has taught and acted as Head of the Tax section at the Bar Admission Course and has also taught at the Executive M.B.A. program for the Faculty of Management at the University of Toronto. He is the author of several legal publications.

Mary Josephine Nolan of Windsor is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice. She replaces Mr. Justice J.H. Brockenshire, who has elected to become a supernumerary judge.

Madam Justice Nolan received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Windsor in 1981, and was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1983.

In 1997, she was appointed a Case Management Master of the Ontario Supreme Court of Justice. Prior to that appointment, she was Regional Counsel at the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee for the South and West Region for the Ministry of the Attorney General. She has also served as Court Services Manager for the Ministry of the Attorney General from 1990 until 1995.

Madam Justice Nolan has been an adjunct professor at the University of Windsor Faculty of Law since 1999. She is a past member of the Family Court Resource Coordinating Committee and of the Civil Justice Review, Family Group.

These appointments are effective immediately.
