QUEBEC JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, May 13, 2005 – The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Irwin Cotler, today announced the following appointment:

Christiane Alary of Montréal is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec. She replaces Mr. Justice J. Dufresne who was appointed to the Court of Appeal.

Madam Justice Alary received a Bachelor of Laws from l'Université de Montréal in 1982, and was admitted to the Barreau du Québec in 1983. Since her call to the Bar, she has been a partner with the firm de Grandpré Chait where she practised primarily in the areas of business law and commercial arbitration.

In the past, she has been a member of the file management committee of the Centre canadien d'arbitrage commerciale. She is the past president of the Canadian Bar Association, Quebec division and has been a member of the board of directors and executive committee of the Canadian Bar Association. She is the author of several legal publications.

This appointment is effective immediately.
