FEDERAL COURT JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED
OTTAWA, May 16, 2005 – Irwin Cotler, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:
Roger T. Hughes, Q.C. of Toronto is appointed a judge of the Federal Court.
Mr. Justice Hughes received a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from Queen’s University in 1963 and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Toronto in 1966. He was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1968 and to the Alberta Bar in 1974.
At the time of his appointment, he was a partner with the firm Sim Hughes Ashton and McKay in Toronto . He is certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a specialist in civil litigation and intellectual property.
In the past, he has acted as Director of the LLM Programme in Intellectual Property at Osgoode Hall Law School and is the former President of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada. A past member of the Federal Court Rules Committee, he is also a frequent lecturer and the author of several legal publications.
This appointment is effective June 1, 2005.
