ONTARIO JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, June 17, 2005 – Irwin Cotler, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

The Honourable John F. McCartney of Thunder Bay is appointed Regional Senior Judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario for the Northwest Region.

Mr. Justice McCartney received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Ottawa in 1965 and was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1967.

Prior to his initial appointment to the Bench, Mr. Justice McCartney was a partner at the firm McCartney and Judge in Thunder Bay. In 1996, he was appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario for the Northwest Region.

This appointment is effective immediately.
