ALBERTA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, November 24, 2005 – Irwin Cotler, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

The Honourable Peter W.L. Martin, of Calgary is appointed a judge of the Court of Appeal of Alberta. He replaces Madam Justice E.A. McFayden who has elected supernumerary status.

Mr. Justice Martin received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Manitoba in 1976. He was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1977 and worked as a Crown Prosecutor in Calgary for the next eighteen years. In 1988, he was appointed Queen's Counsel. He was appointed to the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta in 1998 and to the Nunavut Court of Justice in 1999.

At the time of his initial appointment, he was a partner with the firm Evans, Martin, Wilson where he practised primarily in the area of criminal law. Mr. Justice Martin also served as president of the Law Society of Alberta in 1995.

This appointment is effective immediately.
