NEW BRUNSWICK JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED


OTTAWA, June 9, 1999 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:

Mr. Justice George S. Rideout of Moncton, a Judge of the Court of Queen's Bench of New Brunswick (Family Division), is appointed a Judge of the Court of Queen's Bench of New Brunswick (Trial Division) in Moncton. He replaces Mr. Justice Paul Godin, who has resigned.

Mr. Justice Rideout graduated in law from the University of New Brunswick, and was admitted to the Bar of New Brunswick in 1971. Prior to his appointment to the Bench in 1998, Mr. Justice Rideout had been practising law with the firm of Bingham Rideout Brison Blair, mainly in the areas of corporate and commercial law, family law and insurance law.

From 1983 to 1988, Mr. Justice Rideout served as Mayor of the City of Moncton, and from 1988 to 1997, as Member of Parliament for Moncton.

Brigitte M. Robichaud, Q.C., of Moncton is appointed a judge of the Court of Queen's Bench (Family Division) in Moncton. She replaces Mr. Justice Rideout, who has been appointed to the Trial Division.

Madam Justice Robichaud graduated in law from the University of New Brunswick, and was admitted to the Bar of New Brunswick in 1980. She then joined the firm of Savoie & Drapeau. Prior to her appointment to the Bench, she had been practising civil and family litigation and administrative and labour law with the firm of Stewart McKelvey Sterling Scales in Moncton.

From 1991 to 1997, Madam Justice Robichaud has been a member of the Board of Directors of the YMCA of the greater Moncton area. She was also a member of the Board of Governors of the University of New Brunswick from 1993 to 1997.

These appointments are effective immediately.
