QUEBEC JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS

OTTAWA, December 8, 1999 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:

The Honourable Jacques J. Levesque, a judge of the Quebec Superior Court for the District of Trois-Rivières, is appointed a Judge of the Quebec Superior Court for the District of Quebec. He replaces Mr. Justice A. Carrier, who has resigned.

Mr. Justice Levesque obtained his law degree from the Université Laval de Québec in 1973, and was called to the Quebec Bar, in 1975. Prior to his appointment to the Quebec Superior Court for the District of Trois-Rivières in 1993, Mr. Justice Levesque practised law with the firm of Lajoie, Levesque, Beaudoin, Héon in Trois-Rivières, in the fields of civil, commercial, criminal, litigation, matrimonial, and municipal law. Mr. Justice Levesque is a former Bâtonnier of the Barreau de Trois-Rivières.

Michel Richard, of Trois-Rivières, is appointed a Judge of the Quebec Superior Court for the District of Trois-Rivières. He replaces Mr. Justice Jacques J. Levesque who was appointed to the Quebec Superior Court for the District of Quebec.

Mr. Justice Richard obtained his law degree from the Université de Sherbrooke in 1970, and was called to the Quebec Bar in 1971. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Justice Richard practised law with the firm of Beaumier, Richard in Trois-Rivières. Mr. Justice Richard is a member of the Quebec Bar and the Canadian Bar Association. Throughout his career, Mr. Justice Richard has attended various professional seminars of the Canadian Bar Association, the Quebec Bar, and the American Bar Association. Since 1991 he has been a Professional Inspector for the Quebec Bar and has been the Administrator for the Centre diocésain de pastorale in Trois-Rivières for 20 years.

These appointments are effective immediately.
