FEDERAL COURT OF CANADA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS



OTTAWA, January 22, 1999 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments.

Mr. Justice Marshall E. Rothstein of Ottawa is appointed a Judge of the Federal Court of Canada, Appeal Division. He replaces Mr. Justice A. J. Stone who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Rothstein graduated in Law from the University of Manitoba and was called to the Bar of Manitoba in 1966. Prior to his appointment to the Federal Court of Canada, Trial Division, in 1992, Mr. Justice Rothstein practised administrative law and litigation with the Winnipeg firm of Aikins, MacAulay & Thorvaldson.

J. François Lemieux of Ottawa is appointed a Judge of the Federal Court of Canada, Trial Division. He replaces Mr. Justice J. K. Hugessen who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Lemieux graduated in Law from the University of Toronto in 1964 and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1966. Since 1967, Mr. Justice Lemieux has been practising administrative law, constitutional law and public international law with the firm of Osler, Hoskin, Harcourt, with whom he has been a partner since 1973.

Karen Ruth Sharlow of Vancouver is appointed a Judge of the Federal Court of Canada, Trial Division. She replaces Mr. Justice F.C. Muldoon who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Madam Justice Sharlow graduated in Law from the University of British Columbia in 1981 and was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1982.

Madam Justice Sharlow practised law with the firm of McCarthy, Tétrault and, since 1990, with the firm of Thorsteinssons with whom she has been a partner since 1992. Madam Justice Sharlow has mainly practised tax litigation. She has been a member of the Tax Court of Canada's Bench and Bar Committee and of the Federal Court of Canada's Rules Committee.

These appointments are effective immediately.
