CANADIAN HUMAN RIGHTS TRIBUNAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED


OTTAWA, March 10, 1999 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada today announced the appointment of :

Nick G. Sibbeston of Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories, as a part-time member of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal. Mr. Sibbeston obtained a law degree at the University of Alberta in 1975 and was called to the Bar of the Northwest Territories the following year.

Mr. Sibbeston was the first Aboriginal lawyer in the Northwest Territories.

Mr. Sibbeston was Premier of the Northwest Territories for 2 years, served 6 years in Cabinet and was Member of the Legislative Assembly for 16 years. He worked as a Justice Specialist for the Government of the Northwest Territories and as the Public Administrator for Deh Cho Health & Social Services during 1993-1998. Mr. Sibberton also served as a member of the Northwest Territories Electoral Boundaries Commission during 1998. He has also been a member of hte Candian Human Rights Tribunal Panel from 1996 to 1998.

This appointment is effective immediately.
