NUNAVUT JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED


OTTAWA, January 11, 1999 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment.

Madam Justice Beverly Browne of Iqaluit is appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of Nunavut, in Iqaluit. She fills a newly created position.

Madam Justice Browne graduated in law from the University of Alberta in 1975 and was called to the Bar of Alberta and of the Northwest Territories in 1976.

Madam Justice Browne first practised law with the firms Wright, Chivers & Company, and Freeland, Royal, McCrum & Browne, in Edmonton. Prior to being appointed to the Northwest Territory Territorial Court in Iqaluit in 1990, Madam Justice Browne had been a sole practitioner in Vermilion, Alberta, since 1982.

This appointment is effective April 1, 1999.
