QUEBEC JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED


OTTAWA, February 11, 1999 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments :

Richard Nadeau of Napierville is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec in Montreal. He replaces Mr. Justice B.J. Greenberg who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Nadeau obtained a Licentiate in Laws from the University of Montreal in 1967 and was called to the Quebec Bar in 1968. Before being appointed to the Bench, he was a partner with the firm Bélanger, Sauvé where he practised civil law, specializing in construction law, professional liability, commercial litigation and insurance law.

William Fraiberg of Westmount is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec in Montreal. He replaces Mr. Justice D. Durocher who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Fraiberg obtained a Bachelor of Civil Law Degree from McGill University in 1966, completed studies in comparative law at the University of Paris in 1967 and was called to the Quebec Bar in 1968. He began practising law with the firm Phillips & Vineberg. In 1979, he joined the firm Mendelsohn Rosentzveig Shacter. Since 1997, he has been in sole practice and also serves as legal counsel to St. Mary’s Hospital. Mr. Justice Fraiberg has practised principally in the fields of commercial law and civil litigation.

Hélène Langlois of Senneville is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec in Montreal. She replaces Mr. Justice J. Vaillancourt who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Madam Justice Langlois obtained a Bachelor of Civil Law Degree from the University of Montreal in 1975 and was called to the Quebec Bar in 1976. She then joined the firm Lavery de Billy, in which she became a partner in 1983. She has practised law with this firm principally in the field of general liability, and more specifically, medical and hospital professional liability and disciplinary law.

These appointments are effective immediately.
