QUEBEC JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED



OTTAWA

, January 29, 1997 -- The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Allan Rock, today announced the following appointments:



The Honourable Judge Raymond Wilbrod Pronovost of Shawinigan-Sud is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec for the district of Saint-Maurice. He replaces

Mr. Justice G. Gauthier who recently resigned as a Superior Court judge.



Mr. Justice Pronovost obtained his law degree from the université Laval in 1974 and was admitted to the Barreau du Québec in 1975. Before being appointed a judge of the Court of Quebec in 1990, he practised law with the firm Pronovost and Pagé in Shawinigan.



Jean-François de Grandpré of Ville Mont-Royal is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec for the district of Montreal. He replaces Mr. Justice A.G. Biron, who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.



Mr. Justice de Grandpré obtained his law degree from McGill University in 1970 and was admitted to the Barreau du Québec in 1971. Since then, he has been practising primarily in the areas of insurance law and civil litigation with the firm Lavery, de Billy.



Jean-Guy Dubois of Victoriaville is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec for the district of Longueuil. He replaces Mr. Justice B. Gratton, who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.



Mr. Justice Dubois obtained his law degree from the Université de Sherbrooke in 1971 and was admitted to the Barreau du Québec in 1973. He then practised law with the firm Denault, Allard, Dubois and Arpin until 1980. From 1980 to 1984, he represented the riding of Lotbinière in the House of Commons in Ottawa. Since then, he has been practising general law with the firm now known as Caron, Dubois, Labbé.



Mr. Justice Dubois was Bâtonnier of the Barreau d'Arthabaska in 1994-95.



These appointments are effective immediately.
