ALBERTA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED



OTTAWA

, August 28, 1997 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

Barbara E. Romaine, Q.C., of Calgary, is appointed a judge of the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta in Calgary. She replaces Mr. Justice A.B. Sulatycky, who was appointed to the Court of Appeal.

Madam Justice Romaine graduated in law from the University of Alberta in 1974, and was called to the Bar of Alberta in 1975.

Until 1981, Madam Justice Romaine practised law with the firm Brunet, Duckworth & Palmer. She has been a partner of McCarthy Tétrault since 1982, and has mainly practised in the areas of corporate and securities law.

Madam Justice Romaine has been President of the Law Society of Alberta. She has been involved in various capacities in Continuing Legal Education at the University of Calgary, as well as at the Legal Education Society of Alberta.

This appointment is effective immediately.
