ALBERTA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED



OTTAWA, July 7, 1997 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:

The Honourable Mr. Justice Allen B. Sulatycky of Calgary is appointed a judge of the Court of Appeal of Alberta in Calgary. He replaces Mr. Justice R.P. Kerans, who resigned.

Mr. Justice Sulatycky graduated in law from the University of Saskatchewan in 1962, and was called to the Bar of Alberta in 1963.

Mr. Justice Sulatycky was appointed to the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta in 1982. Prior to his appointment to the Bench, Mr. Justice Sulatycky practised law with the firm of Parlee, Irving, Henning, Mustard & Rodney. From 1968 to 1973, he was a Member of Parliament.

Jacqueline Coutu of Edmonton is appointed a judge of the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta in Grande Prairie. She fills a newly created position.

Madam Justice Coutu graduated in law from the University of Alberta in 1974, and was called to the Bar of Alberta in 1975.

Madam Justice Coutu first practised law with the firm of Gauk, Willis, and Dobko in Grande Prairie. In 1977, she formed the firm of Coutu and Myroniuk, which had a general practice in Grande Prairie. Madam Justice Coutu was a senior member of the City of Edmonton's Legal Department from 1985. She has been a member of the Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society since 1995.

These appointments are effective immediately.
