NOVA SCOTIA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED
OTTAWA
, August 28, 1997 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:
Thomas Albert Cromwell, of Bedford, is appointed a judge of the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal in Halifax. He replaces Mr. Justice J.D. Hallett, who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.
Mr. Justice Cromwell received his LL.B. from Queen's University in 1976 and his B.C.L. from Oxford University in 1977. He was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1979 and to the Bar of Nova Scotia in 1984. From 1979 to 1982, he was a partner with
the firm O'Hara, Cromwell and Wilkin in Kingston. From 1980 to 1982, he lectured on civil procedure at the Faculty of Law, Queen's University. Mr. Justice Cromwell has been a professor at Dalhousie Law School since 1982. From 1984 to 1992,
he acted as arbitrator under the Trade Union Act, Civil Service Collective Bargaining Act, and Canada Labour Act. From 1989 to 1990, he was Vice-Chair of Dalhousie University Senate. From 1990 to 1991, he acted as Research
Director and Project Manager of the Canadian Bar Association National Court Reform Task Force. He was Vice-Chair of the Nova Scotia Labour Relations Board and Construction Inquiry Panel from 1991 to 1992, and acted as Executive Legal Officer for
the Supreme Court of Canada from 1992 to 1995. He has since resumed teaching full-time at Dalhousie Law School, and remains associated with the firm Weir and Foulds, in Toronto. Mr. Justice Cromwell is the author of books, articles and reviews on
various legal subjects.
This appointment is effective immediately.
