QUEBEC JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED



OTTAWA

-- November 5, 1997 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minster of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments.

G.B. Maughan, Q.C., of Westmount is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec for the District of Montreal. He replaces Mr. Justice L. Tannenbaum, who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Maughan obtained a Licentiate in Laws from Laval University in 1967, and was called to the Quebec Bar in 1968.

He practised law with the firm of Ogilvy Renault, principally in the field of insurance law. Since 1985 he has been head of this firm's insurance law section. Mr. Justice Maughan has published a number of works and given presentations on professional responsibility and insurance law.

André Wery of Brossard is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec for the District of Montreal. He replaces Mr. Justice I. Halpern, who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Wery obtained a Licentiate in Laws from the University of Montreal in 1974, and was called to the Quebec Bar in 1975. He then joined the firm of Desjardins, Ducharme, Desjardins & Bourque (now known as Desjardins, Ducharme, Stein, Monast), with which he has been associated since 1982. He specialized in civil and commercial law. Mr. Justice Wery has been active in the Canadian Bar Association. He has also been an associate member of the American Bar Association and a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association.

Carol Cohen of Pointe Claire is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec for the District of Montreal. She replaces Mr. Justice J.-L. Léger, who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Madam Justice Cohen graduated with a Licentiate in Laws from McGill University in 1982, and was called to the Quebec Bar in 1983.

She practised law with the firm of Chait Amyot, with which she has been associated since 1989. Her practice focused on trademark, commercial, corporate and real estate law and on medical and pharmaceutical responsibility.

Madam Justice Cohen is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Lord Reading Law Society and the Association de la médecine et du droit du Québec.

Georges Taschereau of Sillery is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec for the District of Québec. He replaces Mr. Justice G. Desjardins, who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Taschereau obtained a Licentiate in Laws from Laval University in 1965. He became a member of the Chambre des notaires du Québec in 1966, and subsequently practised as a notary with the firm of Taschereau, Taschereau et Roberge and the firm of Taschereau, Wright, Rainville in Quebec City.

Mr. Justice Taschereau was called to the Quebec Bar in 1983. He then joined the firm of Flynn, Rivard, where he practised real estate, corporate and commercial law. He has taught a number of law courses in the Quebec Bar's school of professional training.

These appointments are effective immediately.
