ALBERTA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED



OTTAWA, December 2, 1998

-- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments.

Madam Justice Adelle Fruman of Calgary is appointed a judge of the Court of Appeal of Alberta in Calgary. She replaces Madam Justice M. M. Hetherington, who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Madam Justice Fruman obtained a Bachelor in Common Law from McGill University in 1974 and also a Bachelor of Civil Law from the same university in 1975. She was called to the Quebec Bar in 1976 and to the Alberta Bar in 1979.

Madam Justice Fruman was appointed to the Court of Queen's Bench in 1993. Before her appointment to the Bench, she was a partner in the firm of Atkinson, Milvain.

Alexander (Sandy) Graham Park, Q.C. of Calgary is appointed a judge of the Court of Queen's Bench in Calgary. He replaces Madam Justice Adelle Fruman.

Mr. Justice Park graduated in law from the University of Alberta in 1966 and was called to the Bar of Alberta in 1967.

Before his appointment to the Bench, Mr. Justice Park practised civil and criminal litigation in Calgary. He had been a partner in the firm of Park, Sullivan, Wengatz & Bourassa since 1986.

Gerald Verville, Q.C. of Edmonton is appointed a judge of the Court of Queen's Bench in Edmonton. He replaces Mr. Justice R.A.F. Montgomery, who has resigned.

Mr. Justice Verville graduated in Law from the University of Manitoba in 1967 and was called to the Alberta Bar in 1968 and to the Northwest Territories Bar in 1978.

Mr. Justice Verville has practised mainly civil litigation with the firm of Milner, Fenerty since 1968.

L. Darlene Acton of Edmonton is appointed a judge of the Court of Queen's Bench in Edmonton. She replaces Mr. Justice W.J. Girgulis, who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Madam Justice Acton graduated in Law from the University of Alberta in 1984 and was called to the Bar of Alberta in 1985.

Madam Justice Acton first practised law with the firm of Newson, Brumlik. Since 1990, she has been practising civil litigation as an attorney for the Department of Justice of Alberta. From 1968 to 1981, before practising law, Madam Justice Acton was a high school teacher.
