NOVA SCOTIA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, June 30, 1998 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:

Robert W. Wright, QC, of Halifax, is appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia in Halifax. He replaces Mr. Justice D.M. Nunn, who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Wright graduated in law from Dalhousie University in 1971, and was admitted to the Nova Scotia Bar the same year. Mr. Justice Wright has been practising civil litigation, with an emphasis on insurance, employment and professional liability law, with the firm of Daley, Black & Moreira, in Halifax. Mr. Justice Wright has held various positions within the Canadian Bar Association and the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society.

This appointment is effective immediately.

M. Heather Robertson, QC, of Halifax, is appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia in Halifax. She replaces Mr. Justice J.M. MacDonald, who was appointed Associate Chief Justice of the Court.

Madam Justice Robertson graduated in law from Dalhousie Law School in 1975, and was called to the Bar of Nova Scotia the same year. She first practised law with the firm of Walker, Dunlop in Halifax. From 1985 to 1986, she owned and operated Admiral Seafoods, a lobster exporting company. In 1986, Madam Justice Robertson joined the firm of Burchell, MacDougall, with whom she became a partner and where she practised mainly corporate and commercial law. In 1994, she became Chair of the Nova Scoita Police Commission, and in 1995, she acted as Chief of Staff to the Premier of Nova Scotia. Since 1996, Madam Justice Robertson has been Chair of the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board.
