CANADIAN HUMAN RIGHTS TRIBUNAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED


OTTAWA, December 17, 1998 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following part-time appointments to the recently restructured Canadian Human Rights Tribunal.

Ms. Shirish P. Chotalia of Edmonton, Alberta, obtained an LL.B. from the University of Alberta in 1986 and an LL.M. from that same university in 1991. She was admitted to the Bar of Alberta in 1987. Ms. Chotalia has been practising constitutional law and human rights as well as civil litigation with the firm Pundit & Chotalia and was a member of the Alberta Human Rights Commission from 1989 to 1993.

Mr. Athanasios D. Hadjis of Montreal, Quebec, obtained from McGill University an LL.B. and an LL.L. in 1986 and was admitted to the Quebec Bar in 1987. He has since been practising law with the firm Hadjis & Feng. Mr. Hadjis was a member of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal Panel from 1995 to 1998.

Mr. Mukhtyar Tomar of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, graduated, in 1958, in Law from the University of Rajasthan, in Jaipur, India, and obtained an M.A. in History from the same university in 1960. He taught 19 years at Ross Road Junior High School in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Until his appointment to the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal, Mr. Tomar was a member of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission and has been a member of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal Panel.

These appointments are effective immediately.
