TAX COURT OF CANADA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS

OTTAWA, May 11, 2000 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments.

Joe E. Hershfield, Q.C., of Winnipeg, Manitoba, is appointed a Judge of the Tax Court of Canada. He replaces Judge R. Sobier who passed away on March 5, 1999.

Judge Hershfield obtained his LL.B. from the University of Manitoba in 1970 and was called to the Bar of Manitoba the following year. In 1972, he received his LL.M. from the University of Chicago. Since 1986, and until his appointment, he has been a partner with the Winnipeg firm of Taylor McCaffrey, primarily in the fields of income tax, corporate transactions and estate planning. He was also an Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba and has continued various teaching positions for the Law Society of Manitoba, the Canadian Bar Association and the Canadian Tax Foundation. Until his appointment, he was a Governor of the Canadian Tax Foundation and a member of the Professional Consultation Group of the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (Winnipeg). He is the author of several publications on tax issues.

Diane Campbell, Q.C., of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, is appointed a Judge of the Tax Court of Canada. She replaces Judge A.A. Sarchuk who elected to become a supernumerary judge.

Judge Campbell obtained her LL.B. from the University of New Brunswick in 1975 and was called to the Bar of Prince Edward Island the following year. In 1976, she received her LL.M. from Harvard Law School. Since 1991, and until her appointment, Judge Campbell practiced law in Prince Edward Island as a sole practioner, doing mainly solicitor work in business, commercial, estates and real estate law. Judge Campbell has training in mediation and conflict resolution. She is a member of the Discipline Committee of the Law Society of Prince Edward Island and a past member of the Law Society. She was named Queen's Council in 1998.

These appointments are effective immediately.
