MINISTER OF JUSTICE ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENTS TO THE LAW COMMISSION OF CANADA
OTTAWA, June 22, 2000 - The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, announced the following appointment:
Nathalie Des Rosiers, of London, Ontario has been appointed President of the Law Commission of Canada for a term of three years, effective September 1, 2000.
Ms. Des Rosiers obtained her LL.B. from the University of Montreal in 1981. She was admitted to the Bar of Quebec the following year and became a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1987. In 1984, Ms. Des Rosiers earned a Master's of
Law Degree from Harvard University and, just prior to her appointment, was an associate professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Western Ontario. From 1993 to 1996, she was Commissioner of the Ontario Law Reform Commission. Since the
creation of the Law Commission of Canada in 1997, Ms. Des Rosiers has been a part-time Commissioner and has served as Vice-President until her appointment to the presidency. Ms. Des Rosiers is an active member of l'Association des juristes
d'expression française de l'Ontario.
Effective July 1, 2000, three part-time Commissioners of the Law Commission of Canada will be re-appointed : Gwen Boniface of Orillia, Ontario; Alan G. Buchanan of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; and
Stephen Owen, Q.C., of Victoria, British Columbia.
