QUEBEC JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED
OTTAWA, June 22, 2000 - The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:
Martin Bédard of Hull is appointed a judge of the Quebec Superior Court for the District of Hull, Pontiac and Labelle. Mr. Justice Bédard received his LL.B. from Ottawa University in 1973 and was called to the Bar of
Quebec in 1975. At the time of his appointment to the Superior Court of Quebec, he was a partner and practiced law with the Hull firm of Bédard Saucier Lajoie. Mr. Justice Bédard practiced primarly in the fields of labour, municipal,
academic law and labour relations. He has appeared before all levels of the courts. Mr. Justice Bédard is a member of the Canadian Bar Association.
Michel Caron of Quebec is appointed a judge of the Quebec Superior Court for the District of Quebec. Mr. Justice Caron received his LL.B from l'Université de Laval in 1969 and was called to the Bar of Quebec the
following year. Before his appointment to the Superior Court of Quebec, he was with the Quebec firm of Grondin, Poudrier, Bernier practicing primarly in the field of family law. Mr. Justice Caron is a former president of The Bar of Quebec and, at
the time of his appointment, was serving on several committees of that organization. He is also a member of the Canadian Bar Association.
Claude Champagne of Montreal is appointed a judge of the Quebec Superior Court for the District of Montreal. Mr. Justice Champagne received his LL.B. from l'Université de Montreal in 1968 and was called to the Bar of
Quebec the following year. In 1970, he received his LL.M. and in 1972, completed his doctoral studies at l'Université de Montreal. Before his appointment, he was a partner with the Montreal firm of Champagne, Archambault, d'Avignon
and Associates, practicing mainly in civil, labour and administrative law. For many years, Mr. Justice Champagne was a family law instructor at l'Université de Montreal. He is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and the Association
of Lawyers in Famly Law.
Jean-Pierre Chrétien of Montreal is appointed a judge of the Quebec Superior Court for the District of Montreal. Mr. Justice Chrétien received his LL.B. from the University of Ottawa in 1973 and was called to the Bar
of Quebec in 1975. Since 1975, he has been a lawyer at Hydro-Quebec in Montreal, where he was responsible for, among other things, the negotiation and drafting of commercial contracts pertaining to international projects. Mr. Justice
Chrétien has appeared before many administrative tribunals and at both the trial and appellate courts of Quebec.
Yves Tardif of Montreal is appointed a judge of the Quebec Superior Court for the District of Montreal. Mr. Justice Tardif received his LL.B. from l'Université de Montreal in 1969 and was called to the Bar of Quebec the
following year. In 1978, he received his Master's of Public Administration from l'École nationale d'administration publique and in 1979, he completed his M.B.A. from l'Université de Montreal. At the time of his
appointment, he was with la Commission des lésions professionnelles. During his career, Mr. Justice Tardif practiced primarly in the fields of labour, employment, health and administrative law.
These appointments are effective immediately.
