NOVA SCOTIA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED
OTTAWA, July 28, 2000 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:
The Honourable Jamie William Sutherland Saunders, a judge of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia in Halifax, is appointed a judge of the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal. He replaces Mr. Justice D.R. Chipman, who has chosen to become a supernumerary
judge.
Mr. Justice Saunders was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan and received his undergraduate education at Bishop's in Lennoxville, Quebec. He obtained his LL.B. from Dalhousie University in 1973 and was called to the Bar of Nova Scotia in 1974. Mr.
Justice Saunders was first appointed to the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, Trial Division, in 1990.
A strong proponent of continuing legal education for the judiciary and the Bar, Mr. Justice Saunders is a frequent lecturer in criminal law, evidence and advocacy for numerous organizations including the National Judicial Institute, the
Federation of Law Societies and the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society.
The Honourable Linda Lee Oland, a judge of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia in Halifax, is appointed a judge of the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal. She replaces Mr. Justice R.N. Pugsley, who passed away on May 7, 2000.
Madam Justice Oland received her LL.B. from Dalhousie Law School in 1976, and was called to the Bar of Nova Scotia in 1977. In 1998, Madam Justice Oland was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia in Halifax. Before her appointment to
the Bench, she practised law with the firm of McInnes Cooper in Halifax.
These appointments are effective immediately.
