NUNAVUT JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, August 23, 2000 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:

The Honourable Carole M. Conrad of the Court of Appeal of Alberta in Calgary is appointed a Judge of the Nunavut Court of Appeal. Madam Justice Conrad was appointed to the Court of Appeal of Alberta in 1992. Before her appointment to the Court of Queen's Bench in 1986, she had been in private practice in Calgary.

The Honourable Adelle Fruman of the Court of Appeal of Alberta in Calgary is appointed a Judge of the Nunavut Court of Appeal. Madam Justice Fruman was appointed to the Court of Appeal of Alberta in 1998. Before her appointment to the Court of Queen's Bench in 1993, she was a partner in the Calgary firm of Atkinson, Milvain.

The Honourable Peter T. Costigan of the Court of Appeal of Alberta in Edmonton is appointed a Judge of the Nunavut Court of Appeal. Mr. Justice Costigan was appointed to the Court of Appeal of Alberta in 1999. Before his appointment to the Court of Queen's Bench in 1994, he practiced law with the Edmonton firm of Brownlee, Fryett.

The Honourable Ronald S. Veale of the Supreme Court of the Yukon Territory in Whitehorse is appointed a Judge of the Nunavut Court of Appeal. Mr. Justice Veale was appointed to the Supreme Court of the Yukon on January 13, 2000. Before his appointment, he was a partner in the Whitehorse firm of Veale, Austring, Fendrick & Fairman.

These appointments are effective immediately.
