NEW BRUNSWICK JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, October 5, 2000    The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

Réginald Léger, Q.C., of Caraquet is appointed a judge of the New Brunswick Court of Queen's Bench in Bathurst. He replaces Mr. Justice A. Deschênes, who has been appointed to the Court of Appeal.

Mr. Justice Léger received his LL.B. from the University of New Brunswick in 1974, and was admitted to the Bar of New Brunswick that same year. He began his legal career with the Department of Justice for the province of New Brunswick in Bathurst. In 1977, Mr. Justice Léger joined the Caraquet firm of Alie LeBouthillier in general practice with a primary interest in civil litigation, family law and criminal matters. During his years in practice, Mr. Justice Léger has appeared before various administrative tribunals, and for several years was the Expropriations Advisory Officer for New Brunswick. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1991.

This appointment is effective immediately.
