MINISTER OF JUSTICE MARKS EIGHTH ANNIVERSARY OF
POLYTECHNIQUE TRAGEDY
MONTREAL, December 5, 1997 --
Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today called on all Canadians to mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
The Minister made the statement at the meeting of Federal-Provincial-Territorial Ministers of Justice now under way in Montreal. The Ministers are together to discuss a variety of issues aimed at improving Canada's justice system, including our
approach to crime and violence.
"The tragic events of that day in December are etched in the minds and hearts of every Canadian," Minister McLellan said. "From that day forward, individuals and communities across the country made a pledge to do everything possible to
prevent violence against women, to eliminate the dangerous use of firearms, and to respond more effectively to the concerns and needs of victims."
"I urge Canadians to commemorate December 6 with their families, friends and neighbours. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims. Let us work together to ensure that we can learn from this terrible event and make this a country where
women and all Canadians can live in safety."
Established in 1991 by Parliament, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women commemorates the 14 young women whose lives were lost December 6, 1989 at École Polytechnique in Montreal. It was established as a time to
remember all women who die as a result of deliberate acts of violence and to take action to eliminate violence against women in our society.
