CALL FOR ENTRIES FOR SECOND ANNUAL JUSTICIA AWARDS

OTTAWA, April 6, 2001 – The second annual Justicia Awards for Excellence in Journalism will be presented at the annual meeting of the Canadian Bar Association in Saskatoon on August 11.

The Justicia Awards recognize outstanding broadcast and print stories that foster public awareness and understanding of any aspect of the Canadian justice system and the roles played by institutions and participants in the legal system. They are sponsored by the Canadian Bar Association, the Law Commission of Canada and the Department of Justice. Two prize winners are selected by an independent panel of judges selected by the three organizations.

The deadline for entries is May 30, 2001 for entries covering stories that were published or broadcast between May 16, 2000 and May 15th 2001. Entry forms may be obtained from Stephen Hanson of the Canadian Bar Association at 613-237-2925 (ext 147) or at stephenh@cba.org. Last year's inaugural winners were The Halifax Herald and Radio Canada's Le Point.

"Who's Killing Who," a ten-part series of newspaper stories, photos and graphics exploring how homicides are investigated and prosecuted was the winner in the print category. The series was put together by nine different journalists, a photographer and graphic artist under the leadership of Paul Schneidereit, a senior reporter with the Halifax Herald.

The winner in the broadcast category was Les murs de la maison plutôt que les barreaux de la prison, by reporter Valérie Lesage and produced by Nathalie Ferron on Radio-Canada's Le Point. It examined conditional, non-incarceration sentences in Quebec.
